Who the Heck Is Tara Bixby?

Welcome new best friend to the very first ever episode of The Courageously.u Podcast. If we are new besties, you might be thinking, “Who the heck is Tara Bixby?” If that's the case, you are in luck, buddy.

I'm an everyday girl who's married to an awesome fella I met in 6th grade. No, we aren't that sweet love story that lasted through all the rocky years of adolescence, but we are the best of buds. I'm also a stepmomma to two little nuggets, a dog mom, and a therapist.

I'm from good ole Idaho, and I'm absolutely obsessed with my state. I live for the mountains, huckleberry picking is my fav summer past time, and my happy place is anywhere where my bum is planted next to a creek. Country music (old school, not new school) is my jam, but classic rock is a very close second. Gone With the Wind is my favorite movie, pizza is life, and I love my coffee served black.

Well, buddy, I spent YEARS hanging out inside my head, creating all sorts of problems for myself. Then you toss in BIG insecurities, a touch too much alcohol, and grad school, talk about a recipe for disaster.

For years I was my own roadblock, and a serious train wreck. I was the MVP of emotional eating and I struggled with yo-yo dieting, body shame, and BIG insecurities. Emotion regulation was nonexistent, and distress tolerance wasn't even a word in my vocabulary.

Still, want to be buddies?!?

After years of self-work, I FINALLY got out of my head and back into my life. I stopped playing the victim and became my own hero. I broke free from the limiting beliefs and behaviors that kept me stuck, and now I'm here to help you do the same.

courageously.u was born out of an overwhelming desire to do more, to help more, and to show up more. I wanted to ensure women had the tools needed to get out of their heads and into their lives. I wanted to normalize everyday struggle so no one struggled alone in silence.

courageously.u was born on a crisp early fall morning in 2018. As I sat on my couch reading Brene Browns The Gifts of Imperfection, I felt an overwhelming pull in my soul to do more. At the time, I had no clue what more looked like, but I didn't care. I just knew I needed to show up.

Through courageously.u, I show up as the girl I needed when I was going through my toughest times. I needed someone to deliver tough love (heavy on the love, of course) and give me a subtle verbal slap in the face to wake me up. I needed tools and resources, and I needed them fast. So, here I am, showing up as the person I needed to ensure you don't stay stuck in your own emotional swampy waters.

I'm way better at speaking than writing, so it only seemed fitting to start a podcast. I will deliver nuggets of wisdom, courageous stories, and guest episodes every Tuesday.

Consider The Courageously.u Podcast a casual conversation with your best girlfriend. You know those deep chats while snuggled up on the couch in your comfies.

When I first started courageously.u, I struggled between balancing the role of Tara, the everyday girl, and Tara, the therapist. I wanted to be real and vulnerable, but also credible as a therapist. I wanted to ensure my license was safe, and no ethical lines were crossed. That is why I've decided to show up as an everyday girl and not a therapist.

courageously.u is not therapy, and I am not your therapist. I will share my life and struggles, and all the tools that have helped me along the way. I will also share with you the tried and true tools and techniques that I use with clients. You can basically consider me your new best bud.

I also feel it’s important to share that even though I am a therapist, I don’t always have it together or all figured out. I still have bad days where I’m too exhausted to utilize my coping skills or regulate my thoughts or emotions. Occasionally bad habits creep back in. The difference is, now I have the tools I need to work through those dark times and I'm sharing them all with you.
